Your Paint Protection Film Guide

PPF takes the hits so your paint doesn't — rock chips, bugs, and scratches. Give it about a week before the first wash, treat the edges gently, and it'll protect (and even self-heal) for years.

It Takes The Hits, Not Your Paint

Paint protection film is a clear, self-healing layer bonded over your paint. It absorbs the day-to-day abuse that would otherwise chip, etch, and scratch the finish underneath.

Edge Haze Is Normal

Small water or haze pockets near edges and seams dry out over 1–2 weeks. Don't pick at them.

Keep Pressure Off Edges

No pressure washers aimed at the film edges — they can lift them.

Hand Wash First

When you do wash, hand wash gently — skip automatic brush tunnels.

Ongoing Care

Washing Your PPF

Wash PPF much like coated paint — gently, by hand, and always rinse before you touch it. Keep things off the edges and it'll stay invisible.

// Which wash do I need?
Light dustFoam down with car shampoo, no contact needed, rinse soap, dry with leaf blower

RinseGrit guard
  1. Load the mitt in the wash bucket.
  2. Clean one panel, working top to bottom.
  3. Rinse the mitt in the rinse bucket — grit sinks past the guard.
  4. Back to clean soap with a clean mitt, and repeat.
// Step by step

Rinse first, edges last

Pre-rinse to flush off grit before you touch the film. Keep pressure washers a foot back and never aim straight at an edge or seam.

pH-neutral shampoo only

Skip harsh degreasers, solvents, and strong bug-and-tar removers — they can haze or attack the film and its edges.

Two buckets + a soft mitt

One bucket of soapy water, one of clean rinse water with a grit guard. Use a plush microfiber mitt and work top to bottom.

Wash in the shade

Don't wash hot film in direct sun — soap and water dry too fast and leave spots behind.

Dry gently, pat the edges

Use a plush microfiber or a filtered blower. Pat near the edges instead of dragging a towel into them.

No clay bar or harsh polish

Clay and abrasive polishes mar the film. A PPF-safe sealant or ceramic boost spray is fine if you want extra slickness.

Short On Time?

The Touchless Car Wash

Short on time? An automatic touchless wash skips the brushes that can scratch or scuff your film — as long as you pick the right options. Here's how to use one without risking the finish.

Spot-FreeDeionized final rinse

No brushes ever touch your film.

// Step by step

Make sure it's truly touchless

Look for "touchless," or "no-brush." Spinning brushes or cloth flaps drag grit across the film and can scratch or scuff it.

Skip the wax & sealant add-ons

Your film doesn't need them, and the fillers can smear and haze it. A plain wash with a spot-free rinse is all you want.

Choose the spot-free rinse

The deionized "spot-free" option dries with far fewer mineral spots — exactly what film struggles to shed on its own.

Blow dryers will clear most of the water, not all

Plan to dry the remaining drips around the vehicle for the best finish.

Hand-dry on the way out

A plush microfiber towel or a filtered blower stops mineral water spots before they set into the film.

Keep it occasional

Touchless is perfect when you're short on time, but a gentle hand wash once a month keeps the film looking its best.

// Self-Healing

Light Scratches Disappear

The film's clear top layer is elastomeric — fine swirls and light scratches flow back out with a little heat. Deeper cuts that go through the film won't heal.

Warm Water or Sun

A sunny day, warm water, or gentle heat lets light swirls and marks self-heal — often in minutes.

Deep Gouges

Cuts that reach through the film won't heal. Send us a photo — a single panel can usually be replaced.

Rule: don't let bug guts, bird droppings, or tar sit — they can stain the film. Rinse them off promptly.

Keep It Simple

Do's & Don'ts

✓ Do

  • Wait about 7 days before the first wash, then hand wash gently.
  • Rinse off bugs, bird droppings, and tar promptly.
  • Use a pH-neutral shampoo and a soft microfiber mitt.
  • Let light marks self-heal with sun or warm water.
  • Call us if you ever see an edge starting to lift.

Don't

  • Aim a pressure washer directly at the film edges.
  • Use automatic brush car washes.
  • Clay bar, polish, or use harsh solvents on the film.
  • Pick at edges or peel a lifting section — call us instead.
  • Let bird droppings or bug guts bake on in the sun.

PPF Questions

When can I wash my car after PPF?
Wait about 7 days so the adhesive sets and any install moisture escapes. Rain is fine in the meantime; after that, hand wash gently.
Will scratches in the film go away?
Light swirls and fine scratches self-heal with heat — a sunny day or warm water brings them right out. Deep cuts that reach through the film won't heal and may need a panel replaced.
Can I run it through a car wash?
Avoid automatic brush tunnels. A touchless wash is okay, but a gentle two-bucket hand wash is always best — and keep pressure washers off the edges.
There's a little haze or bubble near an edge — normal?
Install moisture near edges and seams clears in 1–2 weeks. If an edge actually lifts or peels after that, don't pull it — give us a call and we'll take care of it.
Will the film turn yellow?
Quality film is UV-stable and backed by a warranty against yellowing. Washing it regularly and keeping contaminants from baking on keeps it crystal clear. If you opted for a ceramic coating, that will help resist yellowing.
Can I put a ceramic coating over my PPF?
Yes — a ceramic coating over film adds slickness and stain resistance and makes cleaning easier. We offer it; just ask.
